Our vision

Zero Food Poverty, Zero Food Waste

Volunteers and staff working together at Kaibosh Hutt Valley branch.

We are the link between the food industry and groups who support people in our local communities.

At Kaibosh, our food rescue mahi and community partnerships work towards our vision of zero food poverty, zero food waste.

By linking the food industry with community groups that support people we ensure that quality surplus food reaches those who are struggling rather than being needlessly discarded. Food rescue benefits our community and our environment.

We have a track record of innovation with impact. Since 2008 we’ve been keeping the food moving, connecting good kai with community groups in Te Upoko-o-te-Ika / Greater Wellington Region.

History of Kaibosh

Robyn and George Langlands founded Kaibosh in 2008. It began organically out of an absurd problem: quality food was going to waste while many people in the Wellington community were going hungry.

Robyn shares the story of how Kaibosh became New Zealand’s first food rescue organisation and grew into a thriving charity, rescuing and redistributing thousands of kilos of food each month.

What we do

Kaibosh is Aotearoa’s first dedicated food rescue charity operating in Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington, Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt Valley, Kāpiti and Horowhenua.

By linking the food industry with community groups that support people in need we ensure that quality surplus food reaches those who are struggling rather than being needlessly discarded. This benefits both our community and our environment.

Kaibosh has three sites located in Pōneke, Pito-one and Paraparaumu.

With the help of 260+ dedicated volunteers, we rescue and sort quality surplus food seven days a week, redistributing 75,000kg each month to our community partners.

Each month this equates to more than 166,000 meals worth of good rescued kai reaching people (based on 450g standard meal metric), preventing 225 tonnes CO2e in greenhouse gas emissions.

Kaibosh provides our service to the community at no cost to both food donors and the charities and community groups we supply.

Looking forward

We are committed to a zero waste / zero hunger future.

Our aspiration is a region where food is honoured as taonga (treasure) – never wasted nor seen as waste and where every whānau has access to the kai they need to thrive.

Guided by indigenous principles of kai sovereignty, we will aim to strengthen food systems that are locally-led, regenerative, reciprocal and equitable, ensuring surplus is shared, resources are protected, and communities (including growers) have more control over food systems.

Help us achieve our vision of zero food poverty, zero food waste

Be part of a community-powered movement creating lasting change.
