Food rescue in Aotearoa

We work together with many other organisations and advocacy groups across the motu.

Tackling food waste & food poverty across the motu.

In 2008, Kaibosh was the first dedicated specialised food rescue charity. Now, there are many other food rescue organisations along with other charities and non-profit collectives – all working to improve food security and food systems.

We are grateful to work and learn alongside them, taking action through food rescue in our communities and advocating for change together.

Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance

The Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance provides national support and advocacy for food rescue organisations around the country. If you’re interested in setting up a food rescue service, check out the map below to see if one exists in your area. If not, please get in touch with AFRA for support.

Kore Hiakai – Zero Hunger Collective

Kore Hiakai as a collective supports the work of community food organisations across New Zealand with their deep research and reporting that helps to inform work to address poverty-related hunger’s root causes, as we all work together to create a food secure Aotearoa.

Champions of 12.3

The New Zealand Champions of 12.3 is a coalition of executives from governments, businesses, international organisations, research institutions, farmer groups and civil society dedicated to inspiring ambition, mobilising action, and accelerating progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3 by 2030.

SDG 12 seeks to “ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.”

The third goal target – SDG 12.3 – calls for halving global food waste at the retail and consumer level and reducing food losses along production and supply chains (including post-harvest losses) by 2030.

New Zealand Food Network

New Zealand Food Network (NZFN) was established with funding from Ministry of Social Development at the beginning of 2020. A gap was seen in the food rescue sector to handle large volume donations of surplus food. NZFN was set up to collect, sort and redistribute bulk surplus food.

NZFN works with food industry to identify and direct bulk surplus food, using their two centralised distribution centres to sort, store food and household items. They then distribute out to Food Hubs who have capacity to receive pallets of food.

Kaibosh premises in Kāpiti and Lower Hutt are NZFN Food Hubs.
