Second harvest

Rescuing unharvested potential – second harvest

Have you wondered about the food that’s good enough to eat but doesn’t make it from farm to table? A lot of good kai grown and nurtured by local growers and farmers won’t make it to market.

We believe that together we can create resilient local food systems. Where every grower, producer and food retailer has a partnership with local food rescue to connect kai with their community.

From farm to food rescue

In 2024 we started a pilot project – second harvest – visiting generous local growers in Horowhenua, to rescue harvested crops that haven’t met international or domestic retail standards, ensuring the value can be retained for local communities.

Would you like to help us with our second harvest project? Please get in touch.

Our team collect second harvest produce, take it to our Kāpiti base to sort it for quality with our trained volunteers, then pack and distribute it immediately to our 150 community partners via our three Kaibosh sites in the Wellington Region.

Our amazing community partners provide a diverse range of activities and social services to our local communities – Marae, community centres, Rangatahi and youth programmes, after school clubs, cooking classes, emergency housing, rehabilitation support, food banks, soup kitchens, meals for elderly, whānau support for new parents and more!

We also take ‘second sort’ produce to our Kaibosh Kitchens in Pito-one and Paraparaumu, where we turn bruised and squishy vegetables and fruit into a variety of soups, stocks, bulk cooking and meal bases for our local communities.
